Every exercise here grades you on finding "the one" — count 1, the downbeat that opens the phrase. New to that? The counting salsa lesson covers it first.
The campana (bongo bell) plays a low "mouth" tone on counts 1, 3, 5 and 7, the pattern's main pulse. In between, a higher "neck" tone fills the gaps for texture: once on count 2, twice (on the beat and its "&") on counts 4, 6 and 8.
Both downbeats ringed above (count 1 and count 5) are still marked by the same low mouth tone. The higher neck tones filling the rest of the pattern don't change what's graded here; they're there to give the loop some color, not to help you find the beat.
